Who Can Drive a Minibus?

Who Can Drive a Minibus

It can be complicated knowing who is able to drive a minibus and the additional qualifications needed to safely and legally drive. To help you and your drivers understand we’ve put together this article below.

The number of seats is key here. Drivers with a full UK driving licence will normally be able to drive a minibus that has up to eight passenger seats. However, if your minibus has over nine seats you will need an additional classification on your licence. 10 to 17 total seats generally need a D1 on your licence or a professional qualification. However, there are situations where you may be able to drive a 12, 15, or 17 seater bus without additional qualifications.

If your bus has over 17 seats, then you may need to complete additional training to obtain a Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) qualification. This is because the vehicle will no longer be classed as a minibus but as a bus or coach. You are in a whole new world.
